Whether you plan on baking every day, or a few times this Holiday Season, there is nothing more aggravating than to find a recipe you just have to make, only to realize you’re missing key ingredients. Chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon-raisin oatmeal cookies, and mom’s chocolate log happen to be a few of my family favorites, and I don’t have to think about it – I just always keep those ingredients on hand this time of year. The lists below will give you your basic baking essentials, but if you have specific recipes in mind already, be sure to check the ingredient list of the recipe as well to ensure you have everything you’ll need, including the equipment and containers for storage, and gifting.

Baking with my Auntie Vera and mom are some of my fondest childhood memories, so why not make it a family affair? Be sure to read through the recipes from beginning to end before you start. Everything will come together much faster if you pre measure the ingredients, plus you’ll be less likely to forget something important, and it will make it easier to assign age-appropriate tasks for all those involved.

Various bread and cookie doughs lend particularly well to preparing in advance, then just bake them off when you’re in a hurry for something homemade to enjoy (not to mention making the house smell yummy)! Divide the dough into portions and use plastic or freezer paper to wrap, then refrigerate or freeze. Cookies for example, should be scooped onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and flash-frozen uncovered. Once ready, transfer to freezer bags and return to your freezer. Mark each bag with a label of contents, baking times, temperatures, and be sure to include the date, so you don’t have to go hunting for the recipe again when you’re ready to use your frozen goodies.

Cinnamon-Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

These cookies embody so many of my favorite flavors – creamy butter, exotically aromatic cinnamon, richly sweet brown sugar, chewy raisins and chunky texture from the old fashioned oats, mmmmmmm! Guaranteed to fill the house with drool worthy aroma so enticing it’s hard to wait for the cookies to finish baking.

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Cinnamon-Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 scant teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup raisins

Directions

Cinnamon-Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Cream the butter, brown sugar, sugar and cinnamon together in a large bowl. Add the eggs in, one at a time, mixing until well incorporated, followed by the vanilla extract, and then the oats.
  3. In another large bowl mix together the dry ingredients, then add a little at a time, mixing slowly at first to avoid sending the flour all over the kitchen counter. Do not over mix. Stir in the raisins.
  4. Drop by tablespoons (I use a small ice cream scoop) onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until browned, but still slightly soft inside, about 10-12 minutes. Remove and let cool.

Serving Suggestions

Serve still warm from the oven or cold with milk, and/or ice cream.

    Leading up to the holiday season you will always find me baking goodies to give away. I have been doing so since last week and there is still a lot more to be done. I love it!
    Your Cinnanon-Raisin Oatmeal Cookies look delish. I cannot wait to try these in the next couple of days. I certainly have all the ingredients for it.

    These cookies look delicious. I love cinnamon so these will definitely be on my baking list this week. I have been baking biscotti and all sorts of goodies for Xmas gifts since last week and I still have a lot more to do. Unfortunately today I had one of Mia’s kinder friends over for a play date and I tried to juggle baking and entertaining them only to find three huge trays of biscotti ruined. Cooked far too long (I forgot my timer).

    Ok…..here it goes…..I made these first thing this morning after feeding the kids breakfast. I made them slightly smaller which gave me a little bit more than 12 cookies. The house had a lovely warm aroma which had both kids excited. Mia did help with adding the ingredients and Jack decided to hide behind the Xmas tree and eat the left over raisins. Of course in true Jack style he left a trail of raisins along the hallway. All in all these turned out slightly chewy (not sure if that should be the case) with a bit of crunch. I ate a couple warm which probably was not a good thing to do first thing in the morning and they were YUMMO. Will definitely be making these again tomorrow. Thanks Julie Anne.
