I used to wear my pearls, but it seems today people can actually eat them! Now I’m a fairly adventurous eater, up for trying most things at least once, but a recent shopping excursion to Fortnum & Mason’s (in London) with my daughter threatened to take my palate to another whole dimension with delicacies bordering on Fear Factor meets Halloween early this year.
Of course, Tatjana took great delight at luring me in – getting me there on the pretense of buying big chocolate coins to welcome my niece and nephew to London with. Then she slyly said, “oh look, mum…
… here’s some more chocolate over here. You should try this!” I did notice she said YOU, not we.
I soon learned why upon closer examination. The imp wanted to see if I would chuck a container full of
chocolate ants in my mouth. Given the choice, I think I would prefer chocolate covered ones to a lollipop.
We do eat with our eyes first (at least they’re much less noticeable in the chocolate). These look like candy left out at a picnic, but then the “gross factor” probably makes them the perfect Halloween treat
for teens. If small insects are not your thing, how about this fossil like scorpion preserved in hard candy?
Or, perhaps you’d like a vodka stinger? Now I have heard the agave worm is suppose to guarantee the strength and quality of Mezcal, a tequila like liqueur, but I must admit I have yet to see an Englishman
sucking a worm up between his teeth from the bottom of his gin and tonic to prove his machismo. Perhaps
a salty snack of BBQ worm crisps might make the drink look more appealing? Evidently the worm has a smokey flavor similar to bacon bits.
Why stop at drinking and eating your worms when you can season with them too? Worm burgers anyone? I’m afraid the extent of my adventurous nature stayed true to my nickname, so I opted for an array of the much more common edible flowers and an expensive packet of pearl dust to top my next
batch of brownies. I don’t know about the validity of pearls being an aphrodisiac, but I can guarantee Jewels loves her jewels, so it’s not that big a leap of faith that they could be delicious too. The 24 K gold lix would also make a great gift for that hard to buy for someone who already has everything.
Halloween is just a little more than a month away, so you do still have time to order . How adventurous is your palate? Would you have tried more, or do you know someone who would?
